Procter & Gamble has initiated a recall of approximately 8.2 million bags of its laundry detergent pods across the United States due to a packaging flaw that presents a potential injury risk to children.
Procter & Gamble announced this voluntary action for its Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods, specifically those products packaged in flexible film bags manufactured between September 2023 and February 2024.
This recall follows three reported cases of children ingesting the detergent, although P&G highlighted no confirmed incidents or injuries directly attributed to the flaw. The packaging issue involves bags that could tear near the zipper track, potentially allowing children access to the hazardous chemicals within the pods. Such exposure could lead to serious health effects, including seizures, coma, respiratory issues, eye injuries, and burns.
Additionally, the recall extends to about 56,741 units distributed in Canada. Since their introduction to the U.S. market in 2012, the brightly coloured, all-in-one detergent pods have been popular for convenience. This incident marks another instance in P&G’s history with safety concerns regarding its detergent pods, recalling the company’s 2012 decision to add safety latches following a child’s hospitalization from ingestion.
