The administration in Peshawar has announced a series of major measures to reduce traffic congestion and improve passenger safety across the city.
Officials finalised the decisions after a comprehensive review of traffic conditions and public transport operations. The head of the Regional Transport Authority, Riaz Khan Mahsud, chaired the review. Officials examined persistent congestion points, safety concerns, and the growing number of unregulated vehicles in the city.
Under the new policy, all private taxis operating in Peshawar must register with the Excise Department. Registered taxis will receive a standardised colour scheme along with QR code stickers for identification. Authorities have warned that unregistered vehicles will face fines and possible impoundment.
The administration has also ordered the immediate closure of more than 100 illegal transport operations, including unauthorised rickshaws and speed stations. Officials said they will initiate arrests against contractors running these services. They described the crackdown as essential to restoring order in the transport sector.
To improve traffic flow on major arteries, officials decided to close unnecessary U-turns on Charsadda Road and Kohat Road. An anti-encroachment drive will also begin in congested areas. Furthermore, Bus Rapid Transit stations that contribute to bottlenecks will be relocated to more open spaces.
Joint enforcement teams comprising assistant commissioners, traffic police, and transport department officials will conduct regular operations along the Bus Rapid Transit corridor. The teams will act against illegal rickshaws, Qingqis, and loaders. These vehicles disrupt traffic and endanger passengers.
Additional restrictions include a ban on trucks, tractor trolleys, and other goods vehicles entering major city roads before 10 pm. Law enforcement and regulatory bodies have also been directed to shift roadside checkpoints to open areas to prevent traffic slowdowns.
Officials said the measures mark a significant step toward a safer, more efficient, and better-regulated transport system. The administration believes that sustained enforcement and coordination among departments will help restore public confidence. They aim to improve daily commuting conditions for Peshawar’s residents.
