The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finalised a major expansion of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), adding two new franchises for the upcoming season. This move marks one of the most significant structural changes in the league’s history.
According to reports, the two new teams will be named Gilgit, after the renowned northern region of Pakistan, and Faisalabad. The PCB had previously shortlisted six cities—including Hyderabad, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad, and Rawalpindi—for the expansion before finalising the selection.
The decision aligns with the announcement by PSL CEO Salman Naseer in October, in which he revealed that the two new teams would be put up for bid. “An auction will be held for two new PSL franchises, and bidding parties will be given a pool of city names from which they can select,” Naseer stated at a press conference.

The progress on expansion surfaced as the PCB concurrently concluded an independent valuation process for all existing PSL franchises and their major commercial assets. This valuation is a critical step ahead of the formal tender process for the sale of the new franchises.
The league continues to navigate other structural matters. Sources indicate that the ownership of the Multan Sultans franchise is likely to be auctioned to bring in a new owner, resolving long-standing management issues.
PSL CEO Salman Naseer also provided updates on infrastructure, noting that lease matters for Peshawar Stadium are being finalised. He emphasised the league’s goal to broaden its reach, stating, “I think from our side… everyone wants to expand our footprint beyond these four cities.” He paid tribute to all teams for building the league’s reputation during challenging times, including periods of political and regional instability.
