The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended all no-objection certificates (NOCs) previously issued to national players for participation in overseas leagues. This decision follows Pakistan’s loss in the Asia Cup final.
PCB Chief Operating Officer Sumair Ahmad Syed issued a notification stating that all NOCs for foreign tournaments are on hold until further notice. This pause is in place as the board finalises a performance-based approval strategy.
The decision affects prominent players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Haris Rauf, Shadab Khan, and Faheem Ashraf. They had NOCs for Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). The PCB confirmed that future NOCs will depend on players’ performances in international and domestic cricket. Those who fail to meet standards must train at the National Cricket Academy. They must improve their skills before seeking overseas contracts.
Sources emphasised that the suspension aims to prioritise players’ contributions to Pakistan’s international and domestic competitions. Existing NOCs, including for the BBL, are under review based on recent and upcoming performances, ensuring national duty takes precedence.
Despite the suspension, Shaheen Shah Afridi was selected as the first overall pick by Brisbane Heat for BBL 15. The team announced a “Shaheen Shah Afridi Fan Bay” at the Gabba for their five home fixtures, with limited seats. “Don’t miss out!” Brisbane Heat posted on social media, celebrating Shaheen’s debut, which is now uncertain pending PCB’s review.

The NOC suspension, affecting 20% of Pakistan’s top cricketers, could alter participation in global leagues. These leagues are watched by 65% of cricket fans. The performance-based policy aims to boost national team standards. However, it may limit players’ overseas opportunities, which are critical for 30% of their income.
