The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi, a former Assistant Superintendent of Police, for a significant role in managing Pakistan’s women’s cricket. This follows Tania Malik’s resignation from her position.
Shehrbano, a distinguished police officer within the Police Services of Pakistan, has emerged as a leading contender for this post. Her candidacy is under review as the PCB seeks to appoint a new head for its women’s cricket department, a vacancy created by Tania’s departure in October 2021.
Shehrbano came into the limelight after her decisive intervention at an incident in Lahore’s Ichhra Bazaar earlier this year, where she rescued a woman from an assault. This act not only showcased her commitment but also brought her national acclaim.
PCB’s chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, who also served as the interim Chief Minister of Punjab, is considering her for the role, impressed by her proactive public service record during his administration.
The leadership position in Pakistan’s women’s cricket has been open since October 2021, and the board is actively seeking a suitable replacement. Shehrbano stands out as a prime candidate.
Additionally, the PCB announced the resignations of Sohaib Sheikh, PSL Director, and Tania Mallick, Head of Women’s Cricket, on Wednesday. Both are leaving to pursue new career opportunities. Sohaib rejoined PCB 13 months ago and has been instrumental in the HBL PSL’s successful seasons since its inception in 2016. Tania started her role at Gaddafi Stadium in October 2021 and has significantly contributed to developing women’s cricket at the grassroots level in Pakistan.
Salman Naseer, PCB Chief Operating Officer, stated, “Sohaib Sheikh and Tania Mallick were pivotal in PCB’s recent advancements. Their efforts have been vital, especially in promoting women’s cricket and managing high-quality events. We acknowledge their dedication and contributions and wish them success in their future endeavours.”
