The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is poised to implement significant changes to its cricket management structure after the national team’s early exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Pakistan’s unprecedented group-stage elimination, including a loss to the USA and a failed match against India, has ignited severe criticism from fans, media, and ex-players.
In reaction, the PCB is considering major adjustments. Plans include dropping at least six current players and resting key figures for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.
The selection committee, which includes Abdul Razzaq, Asad Shafiq, Mohammad Yousuf, Wahab Riaz, captain Babar Azam, and head coach Gary Kirsten, is under review. Proposals suggest replacing the nine-member group with a streamlined panel.
Additionally, Babar Azam might be replaced as white-ball captain, with Mohammad Rizwan being considered. Shan Masood is set to remain as Test captain.
The PCB also plans to adjust central contract criteria to emphasize fitness and performance, potentially affecting even top players’ contract tiers. Efforts to limit players’ league participation to two No Objection Certificates (NOCs) per year aim to prioritize national commitments.
PCB officials, including Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, will deliberate further over the Eid holidays. Decisions expected post-Eid include discussions with Babar Azam about the World Cup setbacks.
With a new focus on fitness, players not meeting standards may be excluded from the squad, reflecting a shift toward more rigorous management and selection processes.
