The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has decided to convene a conference to examine whether to refer a Supreme Court judge based on an audio recording that supposedly captures the judge and former Punjab chief minister Parvez Elahi discussing.
In the released recording, Elahi, a key associate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, is supposedly heard discussing court administration.
However, the former CM said the chat with the attorney had been taped; the audio was distorted.
The PBC has convened a meeting of the heads of all provincial bar councils, including the Islamabad Bar Council, to submit the reference to the Supreme Judicial Council (JSC).
Hassan Raza Pasha, chairman of the PBC’s executive committee, said the council will convene in Islamabad sometime next week, likely on February 23, to tackle the glaring issue.
He told The News that the vice chairs of all provincial bar councils and the head of the Islamabad Bar Council would attend the meeting.
He noted that when the meeting deliberates and accepts the reference filing, it would be sent to the SJC, and the meeting’s conclusion may also be made public.
He reportedly ordered a forensic study of the claimed audio tape during a news conference he purportedly conducted in Lahore a few days earlier. The head of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Abid S. Zubairi, had earlier stated that the audio leaks were altered.
Zubairi stated, “Having listened to the audio recording, I can tell clearly that it has been altered.
