Paul Dano has finally addressed the controversy sparked by Quentin Tarantino after the director harshly criticised his performance in There Will Be Blood. Rather than escalating the dispute, Dano’s measured response shifted attention away from the insult itself.
Dano spoke ahead of a 20th anniversary screening of Little Miss Sunshine at the Sundance Film Festival. When asked about Tarantino’s remarks, his co-star Toni Collette stepped in first. She firmly shut down the question and made clear she had no interest in revisiting the criticism.
Dano later explained that he chose not to respond publicly at the time. He said the reaction from the film community spoke for him.
“That was really nice,” Dano told Variety. “I was incredibly grateful that the world spoke up for me so I didn’t have to.”

Tarantino sparked backlash nearly two months earlier while appearing on Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. During the discussion, he ranked his favourite films of the 21st century and said There Will Be Blood would have placed higher if not for Dano’s performance.
His comments went viral due to their blunt tone. He claimed the role required a stronger counterpart to Daniel Day-Lewis and argued that Dano failed to meet that standard.
The remarks shocked many in the industry, especially given Dano’s critically acclaimed career and multiple award nominations.

Industry Figures Push Back
Filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who worked with Dano on Little Miss Sunshine, publicly rejected Tarantino’s assessment.
Dayton described the comments as embarrassing and suggested Tarantino may have felt challenged by Dano’s raw performance style. Faris highlighted the swift and overwhelming support Dano received from across the industry.
That support extended to fellow actors, including George Clooney, who said he would be honoured to work with Dano and others targeted by Tarantino’s criticism.

As the anniversary screening takes place in Park City, attention has shifted away from the insult itself. The spotlight now rests on Dano’s body of work and his decision to let others speak on his behalf.
By choosing restraint over retaliation, Dano allowed the industry response to deliver the final word. For many observers, that reaction proved more powerful than any direct rebuttal.
