The renowned Nomad Capitalist has revealed its 2025 list of the world’s most powerful passports, with Ireland taking the top position.

The annual ranking, released on Friday, assesses more than just visa-free travel. It considers five key factors: access to visa-free or visa-on-arrival travel, taxation policies, options for dual citizenship, and personal and social freedoms. Ireland achieved an impressive overall score of 109 points due to its strong performance across these criteria.

Irish passport holders enjoy seamless entry to 176 countries, a perk underscoring the nation’s global clout. Hot on its heels, Greece and Switzerland tied for second with 108 points each, thanks to strong travel freedom and citizen-friendly policies. Portugal nabbed third place, while Luxembourg took fourth. Finland and Norway shared fifth, rounding out a competitive European-heavy top tier.

Global Standouts and Stragglers

Further down, the UAE, New Zealand, and Iceland landed joint tenth, blending travel ease with appealing lifestyles. Powerhouses Japan and Singapore, however, slipped slightly. Their strict dual citizenship rules and higher taxes dulled their scores despite robust visa-free access. These nuances highlight Nomad Capitalist’s holistic approach to ranking passport strength.

Pakistan, meanwhile, stumbled near the bottom at 195th, fifth weakest globally. Limited visa-free travel and restrictive policies dragged its score down, starkly contrasting Ireland’s triumph. The report vividly shows how nations stack up in an increasingly mobile world.

Nomad Capitalist’s rankings aren’t just numbers; they signal a passport’s real-world value. For travellers, investors, and ex-pats, Ireland’s win flags it as a prime hub for freedom and opportunity. As countries vie for global talent, this list could shape migration and policy trends in 2025 and beyond.
