“An Evening in Paris” captivated the world with a vibrant opening ceremony for the 2024 Olympics.
Transforming the city into a vast arena, the Seine River became the stage for a parade showcasing France’s rich cultural tapestry. Athletes from 205 nations and a refugee team sailed down the river, undeterred by the rain, marking a spectacular start to the 33rd Olympic Games.
The event celebrated France’s revolutionary spirit, craftsmanship, and architectural heritage, featuring a tribute to notable French women through a multilingual display. The parade of nations, a break from tradition, saw athletes journeying past iconic landmarks like the restored Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre Museum.
Artistic director Thomas Jolly helmed the ceremony, including performances near historical bridges and glimpses into the Monnaie de Paris workshops, where Olympic medals incorporating pieces of the Eiffel Tower are crafted.
The event acknowledged the French Revolution in a segment on emancipation, highlighted by a depiction of Marie Antoinette.
Despite logistical and security challenges, the ceremony promised an unparalleled spectacle, with over 300,000 spectators lining the Seine and millions more watching globally. This marks Paris’s third time hosting the Olympics, with India represented by 117 athletes, including 47 women.
