The State of Palestine has formally inaugurated its embassy in London, marking a significant step in diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom.
The short ceremony took place on Monday in west London, where the Palestinian Mission to the UK was officially upgraded to full embassy status. Palestinian Ambassador Husam Zomlot described the moment as a “profound milestone” for British-Palestinian relations.
“We gather today to mark a historic moment, the inauguration of the embassy of the State of Palestine to the United Kingdom, with full diplomatic status and privileges,” Zomlot said while addressing attendees outside the newly designated embassy building.
The upgrade follows Britain’s September 2025 announcement that it would recognise the State of Palestine, alongside several other countries, including Australia and Canada. The decision came amid growing international concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Wearing a traditional black-and-white keffiyeh, Zomlot said the change represented more than a symbolic gesture. He called it a shift toward Palestinian statehood and self-determination.
“This is not merely a change of name, but a change of direction,” he said before unveiling the embassy’s new plaque. “It is a day of hope and a reminder that peace is inevitable when rooted in justice, dignity, equality, and mutual recognition.”
The UK Foreign Office did not immediately comment on whether Britain plans to open a reciprocal embassy in the Palestinian territories.

Speaking after Zomlot, UK diplomatic representative Alistair Harrison welcomed the development, calling it a “moment of hope” and the beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations.
“This marks the start of a step change in our relationship,” Harrison said, congratulating the ambassador and his team on the transition.
The inauguration comes as a fragile ceasefire remains in place in Gaza since October, following the war triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military response.
