The formation of the new federal government begins today, marking Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet finalization efforts. Confidential sources revealed a prepared shortlist for cabinet roles. Shehbaz is set to become premier next week, with initial ministers ready to be sworn in. His election is assured with PML-N, PPP, and MQM-P’s support. The PPP will initially abstain from the cabinet, necessitating dual roles for some ministers. This strategy keeps the door open for future PPP inclusion.
Without official confirmation, speculation exists that Attaullah Tarar might be named federal information minister. He triumphed over PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari in Lahore. Despite an election loss, Rana Sanaullah could reclaim the interior minister role via a senatorship or NA by-election.
The finance ministry’s leadership is undecided amid significant economic challenges. Ishaq Dar, facing opposition, might instead become a foreign minister, leveraging his connections and experience. Khawaja Asif is also considered for this role. Plans are tentative, with possibilities including leaving the foreign minister post vacant for an adviser or special assistant, possibly Syed Tariq Fatemi.
If PPP joins the cabinet, Bilawal may assume the role of foreign minister, capitalizing on his previous experience. Final cabinet and ministry decisions, including MQM-P’s roles, are pending.
