The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) held a press conference in Rawalpindi where Director General Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry announced the dismissal of several high-ranking military officers, including a lieutenant general, for failing to protect military installations during the May 9 riots.
The drastic measure came after thoroughly reviewing the events that led to the security breakdown. Disciplinary action has also been enforced against other military personnel, affecting 15 officers, which include three major generals and seven brigadiers.
Notably, family members of retired high-ranking officials have also been implicated. A granddaughter of a retired four-star general and a son-in-law of another have been arrested in relation to the ongoing investigations into the May 9 incidents. The family members of other retired generals are also undergoing accountability processes.
Army and Public Sentiments
The May 9 incidents left a deep scar on the nation’s consciousness, particularly among the families of martyrs and army personnel. Major General Chaudhry expressed the collective anguish and questions raised by these groups over the riots and the desecration of monuments dedicated to the country’s martyrs. Chaudhry underlined the intensity of the situation by stating that the damage caused by the miscreants in the May 9 incidents is something even the enemies of Pakistan couldn’t accomplish. The ISPR Director General called the incidents “highly condemnable, a black chapter in Pakistan’s history, and a significant conspiracy against the country.”
Simultaneously, investigations are underway for the violence that erupted following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan. The grieving families of the martyrs are impatiently demanding justice, adding to the pressures faced by the Pakistan Army, which continues its daily efforts to eliminate terrorists from the country.
Operational Response
Despite the tumultuous situation, Major General Chaudhry confirmed that the operation against terrorism is proceeding without hindrance. However, he expressed his concern over the harmful propaganda that has been disseminated against the Pakistan forces. He strongly condemned this false narrative propagated for political purposes and a lust for power, underscoring that the nation cannot be separated from its army. The Major General also assured that the military’s decision-making process is characterized by complete transparency and coordination.
On the other hand, the army is facing losses, with 95 officers and soldiers losing their lives. Still, the Major General remained resolute in the army’s commitment to the country’s defense and welfare. Regardless of the challenges, the forces will not hesitate to sacrifice for the country. Chaudhry also expressed determination that the events of May 9 will not be forgotten, promising stern action against all those involved. He assured the public that everyone involved will be held accountable and punished per the Constitution and law. Furthermore, he emphasized that self-accountability in the army is performed without any discrimination.
Addressing the issue of military trials, the DG ISPR confirmed that the case is currently under the Supreme Court’s review. He stressed that the suspects have full legal rights, including the right to appeal to the Supreme Court, asserting that the Army Act has been part of the law and Constitution for decades.
The Major General concluded the press conference by discussing the economic challenges the country is currently facing. He revealed that the defence budget is at its lowest level in the country’s history, at about 12.5% of the GDP. However, he added a note of optimism, stating that as the economy grows, so will the defense budget.
