Pakistani music is capturing the global football scene, as FIFA chose CokeStudio season 15 viral hit “Blockbuster” to herald Kylian Mbappe’s entry onto the pitch.
The song “Blockbuster” infuses the essence of old Punjabi folk and showcases the creativity of Pakistani talents Zulfikar Jabbar Khan, also known as Xulfi, Umair Butt, Faris Shafi, and Shamroz Butt. Pakistani rapper Faris and Umair and the all-female Gharwi Group featuring Abida, Rooha Rawal, Sajida Bibi, and Saba Hassan contributed vocals.
Recently, FIFA acknowledged this musical achievement by posting a reel on its official TikTok account. This reel captured 25-year-old Mbappe’s celebratory moments on the field, set to the tunes of “Blockbuster,” and was aptly captioned “Mbappe’s ‘BLOCKBUSTER’ entry.”
Released on May 25 as a part of Coke Studio Pakistan’s season 15, “Blockbuster” has resonated with millions in Pakistan and achieved international acclaim. The song’s broad appeal also led to it ranking among the trending tracks on Spotify India, sparking enthusiastic responses on social media.
Xulfi expressed his delight in an Instagram post: “From Coke Studio Pakistan to FIFA’s global stage, our ‘Blockbuster’ just made an appearance with Mbappe on FIFA’s official TikTok page! This feels surreal. Our voices and beats transcend boundaries, creating timelines that were once deemed improbable. Congratulations, Pakistan! This is wonderful and huge.”
This engagement by FIFA follows its recent use of “Aa,” a 2023 track by famed Pakistani folk singer Arif Lohar, to celebrate Argentine football legend Lionel Messi’s birthday.
