After intense campaigning, Pakistan secured a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, receiving widespread applause and 182 votes from the 193-member General Assembly.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram, noted that the election, in which Pakistan was unopposed, demonstrates significant international trust. He highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to addressing global challenges by the UN Charter.
Akram outlined Pakistan’s goals, focusing on conflict prevention and peaceful resolutions. Key areas include promoting peace in South Asia, supporting self-determination in Palestine and Kashmir, fostering stability in Afghanistan, addressing security issues in Africa, and enhancing UN peacekeeping operations.
Pakistan, replacing Japan on January 1, 2025, will start its eighth term. This tenure begins amidst significant global challenges, emphasizing Pakistan’s historical contributions to peace and security.
Pakistan ranks top contributor to UN Peacekeeping Missions, with over 4,000 personnel deployed worldwide. The nation joins alongside last year’s elected non-permanent members—Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia—and the Council’s permanent members.
