On June 20, 2025, Pakistan called for urgent UN Security Council (UNSC) intervention to resolve the escalating Iran-Israel conflict, condemning Israel’s strikes.
During an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in New York, convened at Iran’s request with the support of Pakistan, China, and Russia, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad emphasised the need for dialogue to prevent regional chaos. He condemned Israel’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear and military sites on June 13, which resulted in the deaths of 224 individuals, including civilians. Ahmad described these actions as violations of international law and Iran’s sovereignty. He stated, “Diplomacy, in adherence to the UN Charter, is the only path to a sustainable solution.”

Israel launched attacks on Iran’s Arak reactor and other facilities in response to accusations regarding Iran’s ambitions to develop nuclear weapons, which Iran denies. In retaliation, Iran used drones and missiles, resulting in the deaths of 25 people in Israel and escalating tensions between the two nations. A United Nations Security Council session, chaired by Guyana, occurred simultaneously with European efforts to revive nuclear talks in Geneva.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of a potential “uncontrollable fire” and called for a ceasefire. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi emphasised the risks of radioactive fallout. Iran’s envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, defended Iran’s actions as self-defence, while Israel’s Danny Danon vowed to continue airstrikes. The U.S. expressed support for Israel, whereas Russia and China urged for de-escalation.
Pakistan’s position reflects its regional security concerns; however, India’s denial of U.S. mediation in a related ceasefire, along with unverified casualty figures, necessitates careful interpretation.
