Pakistan sent a record 727,381 skilled workers to Middle Eastern and European countries in 2024 in a historic move to tackle unemployment and bolster foreign remittances.

The Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported that most workers from Pakistan find employment in Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, and Oman. Additionally, many have secured jobs across various European countries, demonstrating the global demand for Pakistan’s skilled labour force.

The Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development attributed this achievement to “aggressive marketing strategies, improved facilitation, and strengthened ties with international employers.” These efforts have expanded job opportunities and ensured better working conditions for Pakistani workers abroad.

A growing number of skilled workers are leaving Pakistan, seeking opportunities abroad as their country faces one of Asia’s highest inflation rates and a devalued currency.

Pakistan’s workforce plays a crucial role in supporting the national economy, with remittances as a key foreign exchange source. Despite ongoing macroeconomic challenges, increasing overseas employment will likely significantly enhance economic stability by boosting foreign inflows.

In January 2024, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, the Minister for Overseas Pakistanis, highlighted the government’s focus on expanding opportunities in Saudi Arabia while enhancing the skill set of Pakistani workers to improve their competitiveness in the Middle Eastern job market. This dual approach aims to secure better employment prospects and higher remittances for the country.

Pakistan annually sends approximately one million skilled workers abroad, a practice that has become a cornerstone of the nation’s economic strategy. These workers contribute to host countries’ economic growth and play a vital role in strengthening Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves.

The record number of skilled workers sent abroad in 2024 is a testament to Pakistan’s proactive approach to addressing unemployment and economic challenges. The government is paving the way for a more prosperous future by fostering international partnerships and investing in workforce development.
