The Senate of Pakistan, on a unanimous decision, adopted a resolution calling for severe punishment for those engaging in negative propaganda against the country’s armed forces.
The resolution moved by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmaker Behramand Tangi from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the resolution, initially demanding a 10-year disqualification from public office for the offenders, was later modified.
The resolution underscores the Senate’s concern over the increasing malicious propaganda against the military and security agencies on social media platforms.
During the hearing, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Qazi Faez Isa expressed concerns over tactics that undermined election processes. The discussion also covered the issue of enforced disappearances, with senators calling for addressing public concerns for maintaining peace. Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed of PML-N raised the issue of mass rejection of PTI candidates’ nomination papers, emphasizing the need for strong political parties to maintain the federation’s stability.
The session further delved into discussions about the worsening law and order situation, referencing recent attacks on political figures and the importance of ensuring a conducive environment for upcoming elections.
Legislative Actions and National Dialogue Initiatives
The Senate session, led by Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani, also focused on legislative actions and the need for a national dialogue. Resolutions were moved concerning various issues, including the need to cater to students’ diverse cultural backgrounds and enforcing policies against drug and tobacco abuse in higher education institutions.
The session highlighted the importance of addressing the grievances of Balochistan protestors and the missing persons issue. Efforts to combat terrorism and protect citizens’ rights were also discussed. Additionally, the Senate was informed about the progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, emphasizing the development in Balochistan and the introduction of government bills to meet international financial requirements.
