The Pakistan semi-final qualification scenario vs Sri Lanka has become clear after New Zealand’s defeat to England in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2026.
New Zealand currently sit second in Group 2 with three points and a net run rate of 1.390. As a result, Pakistan still have a pathway to the semi-finals but only with a decisive victory over Sri Lanka.
A narrow win will not be enough. Pakistan must significantly improve its net run rate to overtake New Zealand.
If Pakistan bat first at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, they must defeat Sri Lanka by 64 runs to surpass New Zealand’s net run rate.
However, if the Salman Agha-led side bowls first, they must chase down the target within 13.1 overs. Only by meeting one of these conditions can Pakistan climb to second place in Group 2.
Sri Lanka has already been eliminated from the tournament. Therefore, qualification depends entirely on Pakistan’s margin of victory and run rate improvement.

If Pakistan secure qualification, they will play Semi-Final One in Colombo on March 4 against the team that tops Super Eight Group 1.
On the other hand, if they fail to achieve the required margin, New Zealand will advance alongside England. In that case, the first semi-final will take place in Kolkata.
