The Pakistan semi-final qualification scenario has become clearer after England defeated New Zealand in a crucial Super Eights clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
England secured a four-wicket win at the R Premadasa Stadium, putting New Zealand’s qualification hopes on hold and keeping Pakistan in contention ahead of their final Group 2 match.
New Zealand posted 159/7 after opting to bat first. Glenn Phillips top-scored with 39, while Tim Seifert and Finn Allen contributed 35 and 29, respectively.
England chased the 160-run target with three balls to spare. Will Jacks remained unbeaten on 32 off 18 balls, while Rehan Ahmed scored 19 not out from seven deliveries in a decisive seventh-wicket partnership.
Pakistan Semi-Final Qualification Scenario Explained
With this result, Pakistan now face Sri Lanka in their final Super Eights fixture in Kandy. The equation is straightforward but challenging.
Pakistan, currently third in Group 2 with one point from two matches, must significantly improve their net run rate. They need to defeat Sri Lanka by approximately 65 runs or chase down the target within 13.1 overs to overtake New Zealand’s net run rate of 1.390.

At present, Pakistan’s net run rate stands at -0.461. Therefore, only a commanding victory will keep their semi-final hopes alive.
If Pakistan fail to win by the required margin, New Zealand will advance alongside England from Group 2. England, meanwhile, has already strengthened their position in the knockouts following their win.
