Pakistan Railways has temporarily suspended train operations on the Quetta to Peshawar route for two days as a precautionary measure due to current flood conditions affecting the region.
The Jaffar Express service will not operate on Monday, August 25, and Tuesday, August 26. Railway authorities have confirmed this suspension to prioritise passenger safety due to adverse weather conditions. However, the Chaman Passenger Train has departed from Quetta as scheduled, indicating that the suspension is specific to routes impacted by flood risks.
In addition to managing weather disruptions, Pakistan Railways is implementing a large-scale digital modernisation program. This initiative aims to enhance safety, reduce delays, and improve efficiency for both passengers and freight.
Official documents state that this upgrade includes deploying advanced communication and signalling systems throughout critical sections of the national network.
- Computerised Interlocking Systems: These systems are being installed at key stations like Landhi, Jummagoth, Badal Nala, and Sarhad. They will replace manual controls to significantly improve train routing and prevent accidents.
- Digital Microwave Radio Communication: The telecom system on the busy Karachi-Lahore section is being overhauled. This new system will ensure secure, uninterrupted data transmission for all train operations.
- Push-to-Talk Digital Network: A new digital communication network is being rolled out in divisions including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sukkur, and Karachi. This technology strengthens real-time coordination between field staff and central control rooms.
These initiatives mark a significant advancement toward developing a more reliable and modern railway infrastructure for Pakistan.
