Pakistan Marks International Earth Day, Tackles Plastic Pollution

Pakistan celebrated International Earth Day with the theme ‘Planet vs Plastics’ to highlight the environmental dangers of plastic use and advocate for reducing plastic dependency.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged citizens to decrease plastic use, support recycling, choose eco-friendly options, and push for robust environmental policies. He emphasized the development of regulations to prohibit single-use plastics by engaging various stakeholders.

He mentioned that the use of polyethene terephthalate (PET) bottles is now limited within federal ministries, reflecting a commitment to a sustainable plastics economy through waste reduction and increased recycling.

Sharif highlighted Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change, noting a general lack of awareness of its risks to development and economic security. He stressed the importance of urgent action to address these threats and enhance the country’s resilience.
