Pakistan is likely to participate in the upcoming World Cup in India, following the acceptance of a ‘hybrid model’ for the preceding Asia Cup.
Under the Hybrid Model, Pakistan will host some Asia Cup matches before the tournament shifts to another venue where India will play their games, likely to be Sri Lanka. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had long opposed the model before accepting it recently.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was prepared to show flexibility for World Cup participation had the BCCI rejected the model. This means Pakistan may play in India for the first time since 2016. The PCB is currently consulting with the government regarding the World Cup schedule, and an official announcement is expected soon.
According to the draft schedule, Pakistan will begin its World Cup campaign on October 6. Their high-profile clash with India is slated for October 15. The final schedule of the tournament will be released just over three months ahead of the first game on October 5.
The PCB views accepting the hybrid model as beneficial to the Asian Cricket Council, as it could serve as a blueprint for managing complex situations like political tensions between India and Pakistan. The PCB is also optimistic about hosting the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
