Pakistan launched its second communication satellite, PAKSAT MM1, on Thursday to strengthen its internet and communication infrastructure. The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) announced the launch of the satellite launch from China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Centre last week.
Earlier this month, Pakistan launched its first satellite as part of China’s Chang’e-6 lunar mission from Hainan. State-run broadcaster Pakistan Television stated that PAKSAT MM1 would “provide the best internet facilities across Pakistan” and enhance television broadcasts, cellular phones, and broadband services. The satellite will start providing services in August.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal attended the launch and expressed optimism. He stated, “The day is not far when we launch our satellites on our rockets from Pakistan’s Space Launch Centre. Congratulations, Pakistan.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the nation, emphasizing the satellite’s potential to deliver the “fastest internet facility” nationwide. He remarked, “With its state-of-the-art communication technology, this satellite promises to revolutionize our digital landscape.”
The prime minister highlighted the satellite’s role in improving citizens’ lives and promoting economic activities, e-commerce, and e-governance. He noted that the launch from Xichang Satellite Launch Centre signifies strong collaboration between Pakistan and China.
PM Shehbaz praised Suparco and everyone involved in the mission. He called the launch a “testament to the nation’s potential and the bright future ahead.” He also mentioned the satellite’s positioning in a geostationary orbit 36,000 kilometres above Earth as an impressive feat showcasing the nation’s scientific and technological prowess.
The launch of PAKSAT MM1 marks a significant advancement in Pakistan’s space and communication capabilities. PM Shehbaz hoped this achievement would be a precursor to even greater space and communication technology successes.
