Pakistan and Iran have agreed to return their respective ambassadors to their posts by January 26, 2024. This decision comes after a period of heightened tensions between the two countries.
Upcoming Visit of Iranian Foreign Minister to Pakistan
The Foreign Office of Pakistan announced that Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, invited by Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani, is scheduled to visit Pakistan on January 29. This visit follows a series of events that strained relations between the two nations.
On January 17, Pakistan withdrew its ambassador from Iran and barred the Iranian envoy, who was visiting his home country, from returning. This move was in response to Iran’s missile attacks on militant bases in southwestern Pakistan, which Pakistan deemed a “blatant breach” of its sovereignty.
The following day, Pakistan conducted retaliatory strikes on terrorists’ hideouts inside Iran, targeting the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF). These cross-border incidents marked a significant escalation in recent years. The tit-for-tat strikes have raised concerns about regional stability, especially in the Middle East conflict.
