Internet users across Pakistan may experience slower speeds and intermittent disruptions on January 15 due to scheduled maintenance on a major international submarine internet cable.
Internet service provider Nayatel said the maintenance work will begin around 2:00 PM and is expected to continue for nearly eight hours. During this period, overall internet performance nationwide may remain affected.
In an email to customers, Nayatel said the work involves an international submarine cable and is unavoidable. The company did not disclose the exact location or technical details of the fault, but warned users to expect reduced speeds during the maintenance window.
Submarine cables carry most of Pakistan’s international data traffic. Any issue with these links can affect browsing, streaming, online meetings, and remote work services nationwide.
Earlier this month, Pakistan also faced widespread internet disruptions. On January 1, 2026, users reported severe slowdowns and outages that lasted more than two days due to a fault at an upstream internet provider.
Pakistan depends on a limited number of submarine cables for global connectivity. During maintenance, service providers reroute traffic through alternate links, but performance often drops despite these measures.
Nayatel and other service providers have advised users to plan essential online tasks in advance to reduce inconvenience during the expected slowdown.
