The Cabinet Division has proactively contacted federal bodies, issuing a crucial advisory on Cybersecurity Threats.
The advisory alert was communicated to all federal ministries and departments in light of a surge in deceptive digital correspondence, falsely claiming legitimacy from government sectors.
The Cabinet Division’s letter, disseminated on Sunday, highlights a disturbing trend. Fraudulent emails and messages have been circulating, originating from counterfeit IDs posing as “JS (COORD),” among other authoritative sources. These deceptive communications mimic official channels, including the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and PM Secretariat, intensifying these cyber invasions’ risk and potential impact.
Most alarmingly, these emails are more than mere imposters. They contain harmful attachments, urging recipients to download potentially malicious files, compromising their digital security protocols.
Navigating the Cybersecurity Minefield
The Cabinet Division, recognizing the gravity of these digital assaults, is enforcing stringent measures. Ministries and departments are instructed to exercise heightened vigilance, especially concerning communications allegedly from the Special Investment Facility Council (SIFC). Specific individuals, including those identified as “Javed” and “Shehzad Ahmed,” are red-flagged as orchestrators of these cyber scams.
Adding a layer of specificity, the advisory explicitly cautions against interaction with certain emails and WhatsApp messages, particularly from the suspect email ID mentioned. Furthermore, the letter mandates a rigorous protocol for handling emails related to the SIFC Apex Committee, requiring sender verification before any interaction.
To fortify their cyber defences, ministries are directed to bolster their systems with anti-virus software. The advisory strongly recommends the utilization of Apple MACs or PCs equipped with a secure, user-friendly GUI-based Linux version, enhancing their resilience against these cyber threats.
Finally, in an actionable directive aimed at containment, the advisory calls for the immediate blocking of specific IP addresses linked to deceptive emails, notably those traced back to communications dated 3 August 2022, falsely attributed to the PMO’s press secretary. This comprehensive response illustrates the government’s commitment to safeguarding its digital domains against the escalating tide of cyber deception.
