PM Shehbaz Sharif has announced an investigation into suspicious letters. These were sent to Supreme Court and high court judges in Islamabad and Lahore. Discovered on Tuesday, the letters targeted all eight Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges. They contained threats and accusations.
Staff found a suspicious powder inside two letters, prompting police action. Cases were registered for criminal intimidation under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Similar letters reached the Supreme Court and Lahore High Court (LHC), leading to more cases. The letters targeted four Supreme Court justices, including Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. They contained threats and a suspicious powder.
LHC judges also received letters, which were discovered by personal staff. This follows a letter from six IHC judges alleging judicial interference.
PM Sharif called for a rigorous, politically unbiased investigation in a cabinet meeting. This comes amid Supreme Court discussions on judicial interference.
Last week, PM Sharif and CJP Isa planned an inquiry commission, which was approved by the cabinet. However, its intended head, ex-CJP Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, stepped down. The Supreme Court then took suo motu action.
PM Sharif underlined the need for responsible investigation without political influence, committing to a thorough inquiry.
