On June 8, 2025, Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy Power Division firmly denied social media rumours claiming a ban on installing multiple electricity meters in a single residential unit. The false reports, which sparked public confusion, were labelled “baseless” in an official statement shared on X.
The Power Division’s spokesperson clarified that no restrictions exist on obtaining a second electricity meter under current regulations. “Eligible applicants can apply as per legal procedures,” the statement read, reassuring citizens of continued access to services.

The viral claims suggested that households could have only one single-phase meter unless the properties were legally subdivided. These claims were labelled as “false and deceptive.” The Division accused those spreading this misinformation of deliberately trying to incite unrest and warned that such actions violate the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).

The Power Division urged citizens to disregard the rumours and cooperate with electricity distribution companies to use their meters lawfully. This would ensure fair and timely consumer access and support transparent energy practices.
The statement follows reports from some media outlets that misrepresented the Ministry’s policies, adding to the confusion. By addressing the issue promptly, the Power Division aims to restore public trust and curb misinformation.
Citizens should confirm information through trusted sources, such as the Ministry of Energy’s official website.
