Pakistan’s general elections in 2024 have captivated attention nationwide, with political factions, independent contenders, and the electorate keenly monitoring the progress of the eagerly anticipated yet unofficial and unconfirmed results.
On February 8th, citizens across Pakistan exercised their democratic rights by voting for their preferred candidates for national and provincial assemblies across 855 constituencies, notwithstanding the disruption of mobile and internet services.
Marking a departure from the 2018 elections, the 2024 polls have seen unparalleled developments, including a record-breaking budget of Rs48 billion, an increase in voter turnout surpassing 50% of the total population, an exceptional number of independent candidates totalling nearly 18,000, and the need for an extensive volume of paper to produce 260 million ballots.
A formidable workforce of over 1.4 million polling officials was deployed to 90,675 stations, with 16,766 identified as highly sensitive, to facilitate the electoral process. February 8th was declared a public holiday, further encouraging voter participation.
Polling commenced at 8 a.m., with some locations experiencing slight delays, and concluded at 5 p.m. nationwide, marking this event as Pakistan’s largest general election within the framework of the world’s fifth-largest democracy.
The polling day was largely peaceful despite suspending cellular services from the early hours for security considerations. However, an act of terrorism in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulted in the tragic loss of four policemen.
Although the results were initially expected to be finalized shortly after midnight, the release of unofficial results faced delays exceeding 24 hours after the polling.
As preliminary results emerged, independent candidates appeared to lead the polls, with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) asserting their ability to establish a majority government at the centre. Nonetheless, the prolonged delay in consolidating the final results has ignited controversy and speculation.
