The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasted that the country will experience heavy monsoon rains from June to August.
The PMD forecast might offer some relief from the intense heat, yet it also raises concerns about potential flash floods due to excessive rainfall.
According to the PMD’s outlook, most regions are predicted to receive normal or above-normal rainfall this year. However, central and northern Punjab might face excessive downpours. Similarly, southern Sindh and Balochistan are also at risk of experiencing heavy rains.
Conversely, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to have average rainfall levels this season. The meteorological department notes that the first phase of the monsoon could bring heavier rains compared to the second phase.
Previously, on May 27, the PMD forecasted that Punjab and the upper parts of the country would receive rainfall during the current week, potentially breaking the heatwave. As temperatures soared above 40°C in many cities, isolated wet spells were also predicted for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and several Punjab cities.
The department mentioned that a shallow westerly wave might affect the upper parts of the country around the evening or night of May 28, possibly easing the severe heatwave conditions in these areas.
However, the intense heat is expected to continue in central and southern parts, including Punjab and Sindh, where daytime temperatures will likely remain 3°C to 4°C above normal.
