The Pakistan 5G spectrum auction on March 10 is approaching, with two major telecom operators having secured their participation. Ufone and Zong have each deposited $15 million in pre-bid earnest money with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
With the February 27 deadline nearing, total pre-bid deposits have reached $30 million. Industry sources suggest that Jazz is also expected to submit its $15 million deposit, as joining the auction is considered essential to maintaining competitiveness.
Pakistan 5G Spectrum Auction March 10: What’s at Stake
The Pakistan 5G spectrum auction on March 10 could generate significant revenue for the government. Officials are reportedly targeting more than $600 million, depending on bidding intensity.
PTA has stated that the auction will be considered successful if at least 50% of the 597 MHz spectrum on offer is sold. This means approximately 300 MHz must be allocated.
If three operators participate, around 300 MHz could be sold automatically, meeting the minimum success benchmark.
The auction is widely regarded as a pivotal step in Pakistan’s digital transformation. Telecom companies aim to expand ultra-fast mobile broadband, enable low-latency services, and support applications such as industrial IoT and smart city infrastructure.
However, operators are entering the bidding process under financial strain. High taxation, rising energy costs, and narrowing margins continue to pressure the telecom sector.
As a result, bidding strategies on March 10 will reflect both competitive ambitions and confidence in Pakistan’s digital economy.
With Ufone and Zong confirmed and Jazz likely to join, the competitive field is nearly set. The final outcome will reveal whether the auction becomes a high-stakes contest or a measured allocation process.
