Pakistan’s 5G spectrum auction is set to take place this Tuesday as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority prepares to launch next-generation mobile services in major cities.
The PTA says 5G services will first roll out in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad after the auction. At the same time, the authority says the shift will also improve existing 4G services nationwide.
The regulator has completed preparations for the auction of 600 MHz of spectrum. To support transparency, it plans to broadcast the full process live.
The PTA says it will use specialised software to protect the integrity of the bidding process. Officials recently completed software testing in the presence of representatives from major telecom companies.
The authority has also reduced the “Right of Way” rate from Rs36,000 to zero in a move aimed at strengthening telecom infrastructure. It says 274 MHz of spectrum is currently available for use, while operators must buy at least 100 MHz under the auction rules.
According to the PTA, the auction framework includes measures designed to improve service quality for consumers. That means the process is not only about faster internet speeds, but also about better overall network performance.
The telecom regulator has also approved a new Mobile Virtual Network Operators policy framework. Under this system, more companies will be able to offer mobile services in Pakistan without building their own networks.
Instead, these companies will use the infrastructure of existing mobile network operators and sell services under their own brands. As a result, users may soon see new mobile service brands in the market, even though they run on current networks.

The new MVNO framework aims to increase competition, expand consumer choice and encourage more customised mobile packages. The source content states that the Federal Cabinet approved the policy and that the PTA formally issued it.
The framework also defines an MVNO as a provider that does not own radio towers, spectrum or core network infrastructure. To apply for an MVNO licence, a company must be incorporated in Pakistan and registered with the SECP.
