The Pakistani government has outlined the legislative schedule for the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment. The bill will follow a defined path through parliament before a final vote.
According to official sources, the timeline is as follows:
- The bill will be formally presented in the Senate on Friday.
- It will then be immediately referred to a Senate committee for review.
- The Senate committee will discuss the amendment on November 8 and 9.
- The legislation will be presented to the full upper house on November 10.
- The bill will be presented in the National Assembly for debate on November 14.
Passing a constitutional amendment requires a significant majority. The government will need 224 votes for passage in the National Assembly.
To ensure smooth progress, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has tasked National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq with building a consensus among political parties. The Speaker has summoned a meeting of all parliamentary leaders to discuss the legislation. A session of the People’s Party’s central executive committee is also scheduled to consult on the amendment.
