The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has finalised its plans for the 2026 Oscars. The 98th Academy Awards will feature a new category for Achievement in Casting during its live broadcast.
This addition marks a significant milestone. It is the first new category introduced to the Oscars telecast since Best Animated Feature debuted in 2001.
The new award highlights the Academy’s ongoing effort to honour all aspects of filmmaking. It formally recognises the critical role casting directors play in shaping a film’s performances and narrative.
The Academy had previously announced the creation of the casting award. Its inclusion in the 2026 broadcast is now officially confirmed. The path to the award will follow a specific timeline. The casting directors’ branch will first shortlist ten eligible films.
