Oscar Pistorius, the former Paralympic star, marked his return to competition at the Ironman 70.3 Durban, finishing third in his category with a time of 5:56:39, 12 years after the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The Oscar Pistorius competition 2025, involving a 2km swim, 90km bike ride, and 21km run, saw the 38-year-old rank 555th overall.
Pistorius was released on parole in January 2024 after serving nine years of a 13-year sentence. He is competing under strict parole conditions, which include participating in anger management and gender-based violence programs. His recent Ironman performance marks a significant milestone since his Olympic and Paralympic races 2012 and has elicited mixed reactions.

On February 14, 2013, Oscar Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and law graduate, through a locked bathroom door in his Pretoria home. He claimed he mistook her for an intruder. However, prosecutors argued that it was a deliberate act of rage, a sentiment echoed by Steenkamp’s mother, June, who stated, “I do not believe Oscar’s version.” Initially convicted of culpable homicide in 2014, Pistorius’s charge was later upgraded to murder in 2015, resulting in a 15-year prison sentence, which was adjusted for time already served.
Per CBS News, Pistorius, living at his uncle’s Pretoria home, is barred from media interviews until his parole ends in December 2029. While accepting his parole, June Steenkamp stated, “No amount of time served will bring Reeva back,” focusing on the Reeva Steenkamp Foundation, per People. Women for Change, a gender rights group, called his early release a “wrong message” on gender-based violence. The Blade Runner parole remains contentious.
