OpenWav unveiled a groundbreaking app at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference. Led by CEO Jaeson Ma and Grammy-winning musician Wyclef Jean, the platform empowers artists by offering direct-to-fan tools. It skips traditional streaming services, allowing musicians to control their music, merchandise, and communities while retaining more profits.
The app lets artists release music, sell merch, host pop-up events, and organise listening parties. Unlike streaming giants, OpenWav gives artists 80% of ticket sale profits and full fan data ownership. Its dropshipping model means no upfront costs for merch. Wyclef Jean called the current streaming system a “rip-off,” citing the millions of streams needed for modest earnings.
Wyclef Jean and Jaeson Ma criticized the music industry’s unfair economics. Jean pointed to Cardi B’s viral TikTok, where she sold CDs on the street, showing even big artists struggle. Ma explained that 1,000 loyal fans paying $10 monthly could earn an artist $120,000 yearly. This direct-to-fan model helps new artists thrive without chasing massive streams.

OpenWav plans to add AI-driven tools for design, promotion, and tour planning. Ma called AI an artist’s “best friend,” boosting both creativity and business. Available on iOS and Android, the app aims to reshape how musicians connect with fans and sustain their careers.
OpenWav’s launch challenges the music industry’s status quo. By prioritizing artist control and fair earnings, it supports newcomers and veterans alike. With industry leaders like Wyclef Jean involved, the platform has credibility to drive change, impacting how music is shared and monetized globally.
OpenWav’s artist-centric app, launched in 2025, empowers musicians to own their careers. Backed by Jaeson Ma and Wyclef Jean, it’s a game-changer for the music industry.
