OpenAI recently rolled out its inaugural app for ChatGPT, marking its entry into the App Store and presenting an alternative to several third-party ChatGPT offerings already available there.
At present, the app is exclusively offered on iOS.
Designed with a straightforward dark theme aesthetic, the iOS app operates like its web counterpart. It requires sign-in and preserves a record of your chat history with the AI. In contrast to the browser version, the iOS app forgoes the left-side toolbar that showcases all features and history. Instead, it adopts a more streamlined, message-chat-like interface for conversations.
OpenAI has strived to encapsulate the capabilities of the GPT-3.5 model into a sleek app. One notable enhancement over the web version is adding an audio recording feature. Users can record their questions, and ChatGPT will provide text responses, demonstrating impressive speed in interpreting your inquiries.
When asked ChatGPT to distinguish between its web and iOS versions. The iOS app responded that it aimed to bring ChatGPT to iOS devices in an accessible, user-friendly format. On the other hand, the web app was unaware of an official OpenAI iOS app, stating, “As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, OpenAI had not released any official iOS application specifically for ChatGPT.” It appears that updates have been more promptly incorporated into the mobile version.
Like its browser-based sibling, the ChatGPT mobile app offers a premium subscription with perks such as AI chatbot access during peak times, faster response times, and priority access to new features and updates. Priced at Rs4,900/month, the premium plan is a worthy consideration for frequent users. However, the robust capabilities of the free version render the premium subscription nonessential for casual use.
The ChatGPT app is a valuable addition to the toolkit of any iOS user, particularly those who frequently utilize AI for work or research purposes. Despite being free, it delivers high-quality service and boasts superior ease of use and accessibility compared to the browser version.
