OpenAI unveiled a more efficient version of its AI technology, which underpins ChatGPT. This enhanced version is now free to all users.
The update to OpenAI’s flagship product came just a day before Google’s anticipated announcement about Gemini. Google’s AI tool competes directly with ChatGPT.
“We’re very excited to bring GPT-4o to all of our free users,” said Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati at the launch event in San Francisco.
According to the company, the new model will be integrated into OpenAI’s products over the next few weeks.
Murati and OpenAI engineers showcased GPT-4o’s capabilities during the virtual event. They asked questions and challenged the improved ChatGPT chatbot.
“These models get more complex, but we want the interaction to become more natural and easy,” Murati stated before the demo.
The demonstration included asking ChatGPT questions in Italian and having the bot interpret facial expressions or solve complex math equations.
The event marked another episode in the AI arms race. OpenAI-backer Microsoft has surpassed Apple as the world’s biggest company by market capitalization.
OpenAI and Microsoft fiercely compete with Google to dominate the generative AI space. Meta and Anthropic are also making significant moves in the industry.
Less advanced versions of OpenAI or Google’s chatbots are available for free. However, whether the public will pay a subscription to access this technology remains.
