OpenAI is reportedly developing a social media platform similar to X. According to a report from The Verge, OpenAI is emerging as a direct competitor to platforms like X and Meta.
The development could intensify the rivalry between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, the owner of X and a former co-founder of OpenAI.
The Verge, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter, revealed that OpenAI has an internal prototype featuring a social feed integrated with ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities. Sam Altman has been seeking feedback on the project from external parties, though the initiative remains in its early stages. It is uncertain whether OpenAI will launch this social network as a standalone application or incorporate it into the existing ChatGPT platform. The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment, leaving many details about the project unclear.

Tensions with Elon Musk Intensify
This potential social media venture could further strain the already tense relationship between Altman and Elon Musk. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but left in 2018, has been at odds with the company since its rise as a leader in generative AI. The feud escalated in February when Musk led a group of investors in an unsolicited $97.4 billion bid to take control of OpenAI, an offer Altman quickly rejected. Last year, Musk sued OpenAI and Altman, alleging they had strayed from the company’s original mission to develop AI for humanity’s benefit, prioritizing profit instead. OpenAI responded with a counter-suit this month, accusing Musk of harassment and attempting to obstruct its transition to a for-profit model. Both parties are preparing for a spring jury trial next year.

An OpenAI social media network would also place the company in direct competition with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, which is reportedly working on a standalone Meta AI service. In February, Altman commented on X about Meta’s plans, stating, “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.” Meta and X benefit from vast amounts of user-generated data on their platforms, which they use to train their AI models. OpenAI’s entry into this space could challenge their dominance, leveraging ChatGPT’s advanced capabilities to attract users seeking innovative social media experiences.

The development of an OpenAI social media network could reshape the tech landscape. By integrating ChatGPT’s features, such as image generation, the platform might offer unique functionalities that differentiate it from competitors. However, the project’s early stage means its success is far from guaranteed.
