OpenAI is reportedly developing its first dedicated ChatGPT-powered consumer device, internally codenamed Sweatpea, with a possible launch planned for the second half of 2026.
While the company has not revealed official design or feature details, industry insiders suggest the device will focus on audio-based interaction. The product is expected to help users complete everyday tasks, respond to prompts, and interact with ChatGPT through voice commands.
OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane confirmed the tentative launch window during the World Economic Forum at Axios House in Davos. He said hardware development will be a major priority for OpenAI in 2026, though pre-registration plans remain under review.

The reported device follows OpenAI’s growing push into hardware. In 2024, the company partnered with renowned designer Jony Ive, and in 2025 it acquired his startup. These moves signal OpenAI’s ambition to enter the premium consumer device market.
Leaks also suggest the ChatGPT device could rival wireless earbuds such as AirPods. Rumoured concepts include an “egg stone” charging case and pill-shaped earpieces designed to rest behind the ear.
According to unverified reports, the device may use a 2-nanometre Exynos chip from Samsung and could be manufactured by Foxconn, which already produces hardware for Apple and Google.
Sources also claim OpenAI is exploring alternative designs, including a pen-shaped audio gadget. These experiments suggest the company is testing multiple form factors before finalising its first ChatGPT-focused device.
