Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan, resigned from the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Wednesday. He cited numerous FIRs and legal cases against him as his reasons for stepping down.
On Tuesday, December 3, Omar Ayub Khan submitted his resignation to NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. He recommended PTI Chairman and NA member Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as his successor on the commission.
He expressed confidence in Barrister Gohar’s capabilities, citing his legal expertise, integrity, and commitment as assets that would benefit the commission. Omar requested the NA Speaker to expedite the processing of his resignation and arrange for Barrister Gohar’s nomination to the JCP.
Omar has been involved in various cases, including alleged terrorism, violent protests, and other charges, all part of PTI’s legal confrontations with the government.
He was one of five lawmakers nominated last month to the restructured forum following the enactment of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
The JCP’s responsibilities include appointing judges to the Supreme Court, high courts, and the Federal Shariat Court, overseeing the performance of high court judges, and preparing their annual evaluations.
