An 81-year-old Ohio man, William Brock, entered a not-guilty plea to a murder charge following the fatal shooting of an Uber driver, Loletha Hall, whom he suspected of conspiring with a scammer.
According to a report from CNN, which referenced information from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, a tragic incident occurred last month when William Brock shot Loletha Hall several times outside his residence in South Charleston. Hall later died from her injuries at a nearby hospital.
The sheriff’s office provided context in a news release, stating that Brock had been receiving threatening calls from a male who falsely claimed a relative of Brock’s was jailed and demanded money for bail. After Brock refused, the caller threatened him and his family.
Unbeknownst to the situation, Hall, aged 61, arrived at Brock’s home in response to a request via her Uber app to pick up a package. Brock, believing Hall was linked to the threatening caller, fatally shot her, claiming in a 911 call post-incident that he feared for his life and that of his family.
Authorities have released dashcam footage from Hall’s vehicle, which captured the confrontation outside Brock’s home. Brock, who subsequently posted a $200,000 bond, faces a murder charge in court.
Uber has been actively coordinating with Hall’s family and the police, confirming the account’s involvement that requested Hall’s service to Brock’s address. The account holder’s identity and any possible connections to the scam have yet to be confirmed, with investigations ongoing to determine if there have been any additional arrests related to the initial scam call.
