Novak Djokovic won the 2023 Australian Open after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6 (4), and 7-6 (5) to win a Grand Slam title for the 22nd time in his career.
Djokovic’s victory in Melbourne allows him to tie Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 Grand Slam victories. After saving a match point, the Serbian athlete grinned widely to mark the occasion.
Djokovic broke the Greek early in the first set to jump out to a quick 3-1 lead, which he converted into a 6-3 first-set victory. After that, Djokovic completely controlled the match from the get-go.
Due to Tsitsipas’ determination to fight, the second set was much more evenly contested.
Even with a set point on Djokovic’s serve, the Greek could not win the match because the Serbian won the tiebreak 7-4 after hitting a perfect forehand at a crucial time.
Djokovic appeared rusty after changing clothes between the second and third sets, making an early double fault and losing his serve, but he recovered to force a tiebreaker.
A strong serve from Djokovic helped him win the tiebreak there 7-5 after taking the first five points.
With this victory, the Serbian has surpassed Roger Federer’s 20 Grand Slam titles and is now tied with Rafael Nadal for the most of any player in career history with 22 titles, which is the joint-highest number.
