Nintendo has confirmed plans to announce the highly anticipated successor to the Nintendo Switch, dubbed the Switch 2, next year.
Rumours suggest it will feature backward compatibility, likely allowing it to support games from the original Nintendo Switch console. Nate the Hate, a respected games industry insider known for accurate leaks, shared this detail. Responding to inquiries on Reddit, he stated, “It has backward compatibility support.”
The speculation about the Switch 2’s capability to handle physical and digital games from its predecessor aligns with previous insights from a third-party Switch peripherals manufacturer. In April, They disclosed that the upcoming console would be backwards compatible.
Moreover, industry analyst David Gibson recently suggested on X (formerly Twitter) that Switch 2 might already be in production, with an official update expected in September. He noted significant investments in production and automation equipment by Nintendo’s assembler, Hosiden, hinting at preparations for a March 2025 release.
In May, Nintendo stated that it would unveil the new console in the fiscal year ending March 2025 and projected sales of 13.5 million units for the current Switch in this financial year. The company continues to robustly support the existing Switch model, with plans to release new titles, including “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” later this year.
However, last month, GamesIndustry.biz reported that developers were advised not to expect the Nintendo Switch 2 to launch within this financial year, anticipating a possible release around April or May 2025.
