Fola David-Tolaram, a Nigerian doctor and artist, recently set a new Guinness World Record for the world’s largest drawing, a grand piece titled “The Unity of Diversity,” created at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
This record-breaking drawing spans an impressive 10,814.5 square feet, about the size of 3.8 tennis courts, and is laid out on the stadium’s pitch. At 31, David-Tolaram crafted a vibrant homage to Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity with this monumental artwork.
“The drawing maps out Nigeria, highlighting the diverse cultures within our multi-cultural nation,” explained David-Tolaram. “I embarked on a journey across Nigeria to personally immerse myself in these cultures before creating this piece.”
He aimed to encapsulate the essence of Nigeria’s cultural wealth, from food and clothing to festivals and musical instruments. “It’s a celebration of our diverse cultures, giving everyone a platform to celebrate their heritage,” he added.
David-Tolaram, a professional artist for a decade, devoted several days to this vast project, employing waterproof markers. The preparation alone, including assembling the canvases to form a single large surface, took two days.
Initially starting from the centre and planning to expand outwards in a circular pattern, he adapted his approach as needed. He would occasionally shift focus from more challenging sections to simpler ones, returning later to complete the intricate details.
