Nicole Kidman recently gave the Los Angeles Times an interview in which she shared insights into the filming of ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ with her then-partner Tom Cruise.
The couple, who were married until 2001, teamed up for the 1999 film directed by Stanley Kubrick. Kidman revealed that Kubrick deliberately leveraged their real-life marriage to enhance the authenticity of their on-screen relationship.
Kubrick, known for his meticulous directing style, specifically chose Kidman and Cruise, seeing an opportunity to infuse the film with the dynamics of their actual relationship. “He asked many questions about our marriage and was very strategic in his approach,” Kidman explained. She recounted how Kubrick often discussed the complexities of relationships, particularly emphasizing the caution needed when dealing with ‘triangles’ in narrative structures, hinting at potential conflicts within group dynamics.
Kidman also touched on the unique challenges and benefits of working so closely with Cruise. While some actors prefer working with their real-life partners due to their natural chemistry, Kidman highlighted the different dynamics in her working relationship with Kubrick compared to Cruise’s. “Stanley had a particular affinity for directing women, which influenced how he interacted with Tom and me differently,” she said.
Despite these challenges, Kidman noted that the intense filming schedule for ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ brought her and Cruise closer together, as they spent nearly all their time nearby. “We even shared a single dressing room on set due to budget constraints, which Stanley insisted upon,” she added. While demanding, this arrangement helped strengthen their bond during the production.
