New Zealand secured a decisive victory against Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opening match at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium on Wednesday. The Blackcaps set a challenging target of 321, which Pakistan could not achieve, ending their chase with significant performance gaps.
Pakistan’s innings began shakily, with early dismissals setting a tone of struggle. Saud Shakeel was sent back to the pavilion for just 6 runs off 19 balls, followed by Muhammad Rizwan, who scored a mere 3 runs before falling to a spectacular catch by Glenn Phillips. Although Babar Azam tried to stabilize the innings with a steady 64 off 90 balls and Fakhar Zaman added 24 off 41 balls, their partnership of 47 runs was insufficient to shift the momentum permanently in Pakistan’s favour.
The dismissal of Fakhar Zaman seemed to be a turning point, after which Salman Agha (42 off 28) and Khushdil Shah (69 off 49) did provide some late resistance, but New Zealand’s bowling attack thwarted their efforts. Mitchell Santner and newcomer Will O’Rourke clinched crucial wickets to seal the game for New Zealand.
New Zealand’s Commanding Innings
New Zealand posted a formidable score of 320/5 from their allotted 50 overs earlier in the day. Will Young was outstanding, contributing a solid 107 off 113 balls, while Tom Latham supported the effort with an unbeaten 118 off 104 balls. Glenn Phillips also played a crucial role, adding a swift 61 off 39 balls towards the end.
Despite early setbacks, losing Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, and Daryl Mitchell for minimal scores, the team recovered brilliantly, largely thanks to Young and Latham’s 118-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Pakistan’s bowling lineup, including Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, found it challenging to contain New Zealand’s batsmen. Haris Rauf, in particular, struggled, conceding 83 runs in his 10-over spell.
With this win, New Zealand earned two crucial points, positioning themselves as leaders of Group 1. On the other hand, Pakistan has slipped to the fourth position, just behind Bangladesh and India, setting the stage for an intriguing contest in Dubai on Thursday.
