The police in the Dera Ghazi Khan region are on high alert following reports of a new Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) wing. This group comprises highly-trained militants targeting Punjab police. According to sources, three DG Khan checkpoints – Lakhani, Jhangi, and Triman – are particularly at risk. These checkpoints are in tribal areas along the provincial borders. Military and civil agencies are actively involved in developing a counterstrategy.
Response and Challenges
A senior official informed about the ‘Istrna’ wing, which focuses on targeted attacks on law enforcement in Punjab. Initially consisting of 10-12 militants, its strength has reportedly grown to about 50. Recent intelligence indicates that Istrna militants used local hostages as human shields during an attack on the Jhangi border post. They have also reportedly allied with the Ladi criminal gang.
In response, the Pakistan Army has increased its presence in the area. Wasim Sial, the additional IG of the Punjab Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), has visited DG Khan to discuss strategies with police authorities.
The official also highlighted the group’s connections with militants in a neighbouring country. He pointed out the local police’s inadequacies, particularly in equipment and resources. The DG Khan police lack an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) suitable for these combat zones, relying on an outdated APC from Rajanpur.
DG Khan Regional Police Officer Sajjad Hussain Manj confirmed the presence of the new TTP group, assuring that the police are utilizing all resources to counter the militants.
