Wahab and Murad were elected on June 15 in a close race between the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI). JI, accusing PPP of election malpractice, observed a black day in protest. They also wrote to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) alleging election rigging.
PPP, however, dismissed these accusations and asked JI to respect the city’s mandate. Seeing PPP’s win as a reflection of the Sindh people’s approval of their governance, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari applauded the outcome.
Interestingly, over 30 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members refrained from voting. With 173 votes, Wahab triumphed over his opponent Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, who secured 160 votes.
